How To Use Dry Shampoo to Create Volume

After sharing my loose waves tutorial, I got tons of questions about how often I wash my hair and what I do to keep it looking fresh between washes.  So today, I’m sharing how I use dry shampoo to create volume on days I don’t have time to (or just don’t feel like 😉) washing my hair!  Dry shampoo is an absolute game changer, and if it isn’t currently in your beauty/hair routine, you have no idea the freedom you are missing out on 😂.  Without dry shampoo, I have to wash my hair daily to keep it from looking oily.  And if I don’t, it definitely doesn’t look voluminous on that second day.

With dry shampoo, I can easily get my hair to last 2-3 days and still hold volume, and can even get a fourth day out of it if I wear it up on the last day!  After trying (I.kid.you.not) over 30 dry shampoos, I have an all-time favorite.  I’ve tried everything from the cheapest drugstore option to the most expensive one they sell at Sephora, and this Living Proof Dry Shampoo takes the cake!!!  If I could gift each and every one of you reading this right now a bottle for yourself, I would do it in a heartbeat because I know it will just change your life 😉.  But really.  It doesn’t leave a gross residue in your hair and actually leaves it feeling clean and not oily in the slightest.

I would say my number one tip for using dry shampoo is to put it in at night before bed! Especially if you are a brunette like me.  It will allow your hair to absorb it overnight and will get rid of any white residue that may be present.  You will wake up with your hair feeling fresh and clean versus caked with product.

So, if I know that I am not going to wash my hair the next morning, the night before I apply my dry shampoo.  And every subsequent night after that if I know I won’t want to wash it again the following day.

To apply, I start by spraying the dry shampoo along my natural part.  Then, I part it parallel to that on each side and spray dry shampoo into those parts.  I do this about 2-3 times on each side, going closer and closer to my ear as I part. Then, I also spray it along my hairline and underneath my hair where baby hairs can become really oily.  Lastly, I spray a bit at the back, top part of my head where it can become oily.  If this is confusing, there’s a video at the bottom of this post where you can see me actually applying it!

Once I have put the dry shampoo in, I flip my hair completely upside down and put it in a super high ponytail.  We’re talking at the very top of my head.  Higher than a cheerleader ponytail 😉.  I secure it with either a cotton scrunchie or one of these coiled hair ties.  I personally am not a fan of other brands of coiled hair ties, but these don’t rip my hair out and don’t leave a crease.  Depending on how thick your hair is, you could use either.

I sleep with my hair like this, above my pillow, all night.  Then in the morning when I take it down, the combo of the dry shampoo and having been pulled up all night creates a ton of volume!!!  I don’t apply anything else in the morning, and typically just curl it or put it up depending on what I want to do that day.

Below is a video of the entire process, which you will see only takes about 2-3 minutes total to complete.  It saves me so much time in the mornings not having to wash and dry my hair, so I hope this is super helpful for you!  Feel free to ask me any questions below!

I love Living Proof’s dry shampoo. It’s definitely one of my favorites. I’ve never used it for volume but I am going to have to test this out, thanks for the tutorial!
